Where the US fights the rivers with armed patrol boats, the North Vietnamese way is quieter. The sampan — the everyday wooden river boat of the delta — is a fitting communist transport for Hell Let Loose: Vietnam: humble, hard to notice, and able to slip through narrow mangrove channels that a bigger craft can’t.
Its value is stealth, not strength. A sampan moves troops and supply through the Mekong Delta along routes that avoid the open water where patrol boats dominate, supporting the NVA’s hit-and-fade game and keeping forward positions fed.
